Gianpaolo Pira: 2020 ligt helemaal in de lijn van de 2019 maar is meer open en heeft meer gratie en cachet. Het wijnjaar kenmerkte zich door een milde winter gevolgd door een droog en zonnig voorjaar. Er was ook minder watertekort als in 2019 waardoor de nebbiolo perfect kon rijpen zonder al te droge schilvorming. e elegante tannines geven meer suaviteit.
Zelden vind je in de kelder van Gianpaolo wijnen die jong al zo aangenaam voor de dag komen. In de basiswijnen blijft Luigi Pira steevast goed geconcentreerde wijnen leveren met veel kleur in Dolcetto 2023, Barbera D’Alba Superiore en de geweldige Langhe Nebbiolo die het niveau van een Barolo haalt. Maar zó uitnodigend heb ik zijn Crus nooit geproefd.

Voortreffelijk veel wijn voor zijn prijs. Diep geconcentreerde bijna zwarte kleur met paarse rand. Een massa zwart fruit komt je tegemoet met zwarte kers en braam in de hoofdrol. Hij kan gerust meerdere jaren rijpen maar is jong onweerstaanbaar.
Zeer geconcentreerde, diep gevulde Barbera geoogst in Roddino. Ook hier de typische middenweg met deels traditionele opvoeding op grote fouders en deels een 12 maanden lange elevering op kleine barrique. Power wijn, krachtig, kruidig en vol, zonovergoten en rijp. Te drinken; 2025-2030.
Druiven afkomstig uit de gemeente Serralunga, vaak uit de crus, die de typische goed gestructureerde, strakke Nebbiolo voortbrengen. Vinificatie in edelstaal en opvoeding traditioneel op Sloveense eiken fouders van 25 hl. In tegenstelling tot de Barolo wordt hij na 9 maanden al gebotteld. Iets eerder toegankelijk daardoor maar na een jaar of 8 lijkt hij blind geproefd als 2 druppels op een Barolo. Zo heeft Gianpaolo mij meermaals beetgenomen.

"Despite a stern finish due to chalky, slightly dry tannins, this Barolo from Serralunga is delicious and with a very good quality price ratio.
Classic sweet violets and fresh strawberries on the nose are allied to a full body and crisp acidity, with an austere finish now that may soften a bit with bottle ageing.
The wine was aged for 24 months in big oak casks.

The palate is soft and refined, full-bodied, with elegant tannins and lifted long acidity. Great tension. Drinkable now but best from 2023.

Gianpaolo Pira is de enige wijnmaker die deze top cru uit Serralunga op het label drukt. De rest van deze topligging is eigendom van Gaia, die de wijn in zijn Sperss (€ 170.00) blend.
Eén klein eilandje Nebbiolo, het filetstuk zit in deze fles. 24 maanden opvoeding op grote fouders en kleine eiken vaten.

The palate is focused on crunchiness, with a medium body, firm tannins soaked with blood oranges, refreshing acidity and a quite sticky finish. Try from 2030.

The Luigi Pira 2017 Barolo Marenca reveals a bright note of sweet cherry or redcurrant that pops first from the bouquet.
That pretty redfruit intensity is quickly followed by spice, earth, toasted hazelnut and candied orange peel.
This is a graceful and smooth expression from a site in Serralunga d'Alba that is almost exclusively farmed by the Pira family, mostly replanted in 1990 and is said to be noted for its powerful Barolo. 2024 – 2038.

"Aged for 12 months in barrique plus a further 12 months in larger botte, this Vignarionda is pretty classic. The concentration of fruit is great: generous yet elegant cherry and strawberry fruit are accompanied by a straw note, while the liquorice finish shows youthful grainy tannins, refined and sweet, along with refreshing acidity. It's a little early to tell for sure, but it should age quite well."
